Yuli Raizman was a Soviet Russian screenwriter and movie director. He became a literary consultant for the German-Russian film studio the Mezhranpom-Rus in 1924. His first directorial film was The Circle in 1927. His first successful film was Penal Servitude in 1928, followed by The Earth Thirsts in 1930.
In 1930, Raizman joined Mosfilm, and he won his first Stalin Prize in 1937 for The Last Night, his first collaboration with the writer Yevgeny Gabrilovich. The movie also achieved international recognition and won the Grand Prix at the Paris International Exhibition of 1937.
His movie Mashenka in 1942 was also a success and won a Stalin Prize of the Second degree. He also created a couple of war documentaries which won the Stalin Prize of the First degree: Fall of Berlin - 1945 and Towards an Armistice with Finland.
Raizman's Rainis (1949) also won another Stalin Prize of the Second degree.
In 1951, his movie Dream of a Cossack, also known as Cavalier of the Golden Star, won the top prize at 1951 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and also played a part for the Grand Prix at the 1951 Cannes Film Festival. It also gathered the Statin Prize of the First degree.
Raizma's The Communist was inspired and marked the 40th anniversary of the October Revolution, followed by Your Contemporary in 1968.
In 1982, his drama film Private Life was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and won the USSR State Prize.
Raizman was the first person to obtain the Honor and Dignity Award for lifetime achievement at the Nika Awards in 1988, awarded by the Russian Academy of Cinema Arts and Science.
