    Bob Rafelson is an American writer, producer, and film director. He is considered as one of the key figures during the New Hollywood movement in 1970s,. His first job in 1959 was a story editor on the TV series Play of the Week, produced by David Susskind. He was first credited for his writing for an episode of the TV series The Witness in 1960 and an episode for the series The Greatest Show on Earth in 1963.

    When Rafelson and his family moved to Hollywood, somewhere in June 1962, he worked as an associate producer on films and television shows at Universal Pictures, Desilu Productions, Revue Productions, and Screen Gems.

    Some of his well-known movies are Five Easy Pieces in 1970, The King of Marvin Gardens in 1972, The Postman Always Rings Twice in 1981, and Mountains of the Moon in 1990. He also produced the most significant movies of the era, such as Easy Rider in 1969 and The Last Picture Show in 1971. Rafelson was one of the creators of the TV series The Monkees, with BBS partner Bert Schneider.

    Rafelson and Schneider won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series as producer for The Monkees series in 1967.

    Rafelson and Schneider founded their company Raybert Productions in 1965, and later became BBS Productions (Bert, Bob, and Steve) when Schneider's childhood friend was added to their company. Their first movie was Five Easy Pieces in 1969. It was a box office hit and earned $18 million and was praised by the critics and was nominated for 4 Academy Awards: Best Original Screenplay, Best Picture, Best Actor for Jack Nicholson and Best Supporting Actress for Karen Black. In 1970, the film also received the New York Film Critics Award for Best Film and Best Director.
