    American film director and screenwriter David Edward Samuel Ernest Peckinpah Jr. (February 21, 1925 – December 28, 1984) achieved prominence following the release of his Western epic The Wild Bunch (1969). He was known for his revisionist approach to the Western genre with his first feature film The Deadly Companions (1961) starring Brian Keith and Maureen O'Hara and made, with his second feature, Ride the High Country (1962), featuring Joel and Randolph Scott. He was given the nickname "Bloody or Mad Sam", due to the violence in his films, including Major Dundee (1965), The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970), Straw Dogs (1971), The Getaway (1972) based on a novel by Jim Thompson, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973), Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974), The Killer Elite (1975), the controversial Cross of Iron (1977) a WW II anti-war epic about a German unit with Maximilian Schell and James Coburn, and Convoy in 1978.

    He was in Siegel's Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), playing the character Charlie Buckholtz, he was a scriptwriter for TV shows, such as Gunsmoke (1955), The Rifleman (1958), and an episode of Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater (1956) titled The Sharpshooter in 1958.

    Peckinpah lived life on alcohol and drugs, although at the end of his life he was considering a number of projects including the Stephen King-scripted ""The Shotgunners"". He had many wives whom he divorced including Begoña Palacios until his death in 1984, from heart failure in a hospital in Inglewood, California, at age 59.
