Suspiria is a 1977 Italian supernatural horror film, partially based on Thomas De Quincey's 1845 essay Suspiria de Profundis, directed by Dario Argento and co-written by Daria Nicolodi (who based her contributions to the screenplay on her grandmother’s story, taking a piano lesson at an unnamed academy, practicing black magic). The film stars Suzy Bannion (Jessica Harper), an American ballet student who transfers to a prestigious dance co-ed Tanz Dance Akademie in Germany, but she realizes that the academy is a front for a supernatural conspiracy after a series of brutal murders. The other cast includes Stefania Casini, who plays a supporting role Sarah, Flavio Bucci, Alida Valli, Udo Kier, Miguel Bosé, and final film role of Joan Bennett. 

Suspiria was recognised as an influential film in the horror genre featuring a score by Argento, including the progressive rock band Goblin. Argento considers the film as the first of the trilogy, followed by The Three Mothers, Inferno (1980) and The Mother of Tears (2007). The film was nominated for two Saturn Awards, namely Best Supporting Actress for Bennett in 1978, and Best DVD Classic Film Release in 2002. All of the cast’s dialogue was dubbed through additional dialogue recording as a common practice in Italian filmmaking. 

Suspiria was released by 20th Century Fox and was featured in the documentary film Terror in the Aisles (1984) and comedy-drama film Juno (2007), and it served as the inspiration for a 2018 film directed by Luca Guadagnino of the same title.
