Kim Novak is an American film and television actress, best known for her dual portrayal of Madeline Elster and Judy Barton in the 1958 thriller Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock. Her performance in the film is now recognized as a significant contribution to cinema history and to Hitchcock’s finest film.

Marily Pauline “Kim” Novak was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 13th, 1933. She studied at Wright Junior College and won two scholarships to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. During summer breaks of her last semester in college, she went across the country to model for a refrigerator company. While in Los Angeles, Kim Novak won a contest held by the company which opened the opportunity of appearing as extra in The French Line in 1954, and Son of Sinbad in 1955. She was discovered by an agent who signed her to a long-term contract with Columbia Pictures in 1954. The producer who discovered her made the suggestion of changing her name because Marilyn Monroe was on the rise at that time.

In the mid-50s, Kim Novak appeared in numerous films like The Notorious Landlady with Jack Lemmon, Pushover, The Man with the Golden Arm with Frank Sinatra, and Picnic. The actress won a Golden Globe for most promising newcomer for her spectacular performance as a socialite in The Eddy Duchin Story. Novak topped as a box-office star for three consecutive years with Pal Joey in 1957, Bell, Book, and Candle in 1958, and Kiss Me, Stupid in 1964.

However, her career went downhill when she appeared in unsuccessful movies and when the producer who discovered her died. Kim Novak faced several struggles and none of her films approached success. She permanently retired from acting after a fight with Mike Figgis during the filming of Liebestraum in 1991.
