My Life to Live (Vivre sa vie : A Film in Twelve Scenes) directed by Jean-Luc Godard , is a 1962 French New Wave drama film and was released as My Life to Live in North America, and as It's My Life in the United Kingdom on home video using the original French title. The French masterpiece is different from other films because of the camera used as opposed to the lightweight cameras used for earlier films. Godard shot the drama over the course of four weeks. One of the film's original source materials is a study of contemporary prostitution by Marcel Sacotte.
Hoping to become an actress, beautiful Parisian Nana (Anna Karina), in her early twenties, leaves her husband and infant son. Earning a living as a shopgirl with little money and unable to fulfill her acting dreams, she chooses to be a prostitute, which is where she meets Le jeune homme (Peter Kassovitz) who truly cares for her. But Raoul (Sady Rebbot) her pimp, after an unspecified period, agrees to sell Nana to another pimp. The pimps argue during the exchange, and Nana is killed in a gun battle.
The Jean-Luc Godard film also draws from the writings of Edgar Allan Poe, Montaigne, Baudelaire, and Zola. It also features allusions to popular culture and its formal playfulness with sound and vision during this period depicts the consumerist culture of Godard's Paris. The film was remade by director Mark Thimijan as She Lives Her Life in 2014 which became the fourth most popular movie in its year of release.
