Lolita is based on the 1955 novel of the same title by Vladimir Nabokov. Lolita, a 1962 comedy-drama film was directed by Stanley Kubrick. The story is about a middle-aged literature lecturer who becomes sexually obsessed with a young adolescent girl. The film starred Sue Lyon as Dolores Haze (Lolita), James Mason as Humbert Humbert, Shelley Winters as Charlotte Haze, and Peter Sellers as Clare Quilty.
Sue Lyon, who played Lolita, was 14 at the time of filming. Sue Lyon was chosen for the title role due to her more mature look. In the novel, the name "Lolita" was used only by Humbert as a private pet nickname. In the book, she is called "Lo" or "Lola" or "Dolly" by the other characters.
Lolita was premiered in New York City on June 13, 1962, . It performed fairly well, with little advertising relying mostly on word-of-mouth; many critics seemed uninterested in the film while others gave it good reviews. Though, the film was very controversial, due to the hebephilia-related content. Sue Lyon won the Golden Globe Awards Most Promising Newcomer – Female.
Lolita polarized contemporary critics for its controversial depictions of child sexual abuse. Kubrick later commented, however, that if he had realized how severe the censorship limitations were going to be, he probably would never have made the film.
