  • Welcome to the official Film/Art Gallery collection of original Lola vintage movie posters. Film/Art Gallery offers a wide range of movie posters and artwork for cinema's ultimate romantic drama films.

Lola is a romantic drama film from 1961 as well as a tribute to director Max Ophuls directed by Jacques Demy. The movie is described by Demy as a "musical without music". Anouk Aimee played in the title role; Lola was reinstituted and re-released by Demy's widow by French filmmaker Agnes Varda.

The title character and the name of the film were influenced by Josef von Sternberg's 1930 film Der blaue Engel, in which Marlene Dietrich performed a burlesque performer named "Lola Lola".

Lola is set in the Atlantic coastal city of Nantes, France. Roland Cassard, a young man (Marc Michel, who later reprises the role of Roland in Demy's 1964 film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg), misspends his life away until he has a chance encounter with Lola (Aimée), a woman he met as a teenager before World War II, who is now a cabaret dancer. Though Roland is quite charmed by her, Lola is preoccupied with her former lover Michel, who left her after impregnating her seven years earlier. Also gunning for Lola's heart is American sailor Frankie (Alan Scott), whose affection is not returned by Lola.

Struggling for work, Roland gets engaged in a diamond-smuggling plot with a local barber. Cecile (Annie Duperoux), a 13-year-old girl, encounters Roland and in many ways, she reminds him of Lola whose real name is also Cecile. In the end, Michel returns to Nantes, apparently very victorious and hoping to marry Lola, just as she is leaving for another job in Marseille. Lola heads off with Michel as she always said she would.
