Walter Lang was an American film director. He directed his first silent film The Red Kimono in 1925. Lang’s most recognized film is The King and I in 1956, a lavish adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Directing and Yul Brynner won the Oscar for Best Actor. Also, a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, the State Fair in 1945. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6520 Hollywood Blvd.
He was an active director from 1925 to 1961. He directed many films: The Red Kimono in 1925; The Earth Woman, The Golden Web, Money to Burn in 1926; The Ladybird and The Satin Woman, Sally in Our Alley; By Whose Hand? and The College Hero in 1927; The Night Flyer; Alice Through a Looking Glass; The Desert Bride in 1928; The Spirit of Youth in 1929; Hello Sister, Cock o' the Walk, The Big Fight, The Costello Case, Brothers in 1930; The films released in 1931 were Command Performance, Hell Bound, Women Go on Forever; No More Orchids were both released in 1932; The Warrior's Husband and Meet the Baron released in 1933; Whom the Gods Destroy, The Party's Over, The Mighty Barnum in 1934; Carnival and Hooray for Love were both broadcast in 1935; Love Before Breakfast in 1936; Top of the Town, Wife, Doctor and Nurse, and Second Honeymoon in 1937; Both films, The Baroness and the Butler and I'll Give a Million released in 1938; The Little Princess and Susannah of the Mounties in 1939; The Blue Bird, Star Dust, The Great Profile and Tin Pan Alley in 1940; Moon Over Miami and Week-End in Havana in 1941; Song of the Islands and The Magnificent Dope in 1942; Coney Island in 1943; Greenwich Village in 1944; In 1946, the Claudia and David, and Sentimental Journey were released; Mother Wore Tights in 1947; Sitting Pretty and When My Baby Smiles at Me in 1948; You're My Everything in 1949; Cheaper by the Dozen, and The Jackpot both broadcast in 1950; On the Riviera in 1951; With a Song in My Heart in 1952; Call Me Madam in 1953; There’s No Business Like Show Business in 1954; Desk Set in 1957; But Not for Me in 1959; Can-Can in 1960; And The Marriage-Go-Round and Snow White and the Three Stooges released in 1961. Land was hired by 20th Century Fox as director. Fox Studies became popular for producing during the 1940s.
Walter Lang was born in Memphis, Tennessee on August 10, 1896 and died in Palm Springs, California on February 7, 1972. He was married to Madalynne Field, a former actress.
