Ota Koval (April 11, 1931 - August 14, 1991) was born in Dobřany, Czechia and studied filmmaking at the FAMU. She began working as an assistant director and screenwriter in the late 1960s in Barrandov film studios. He had worked together with Věra Plívová-Šimková and became a member of famous film directors for children.

His first children's films include the comedy Lucie and the Miracles (1970) and The Katzenprinz (1979) which was a co-production with DEFA, GDR. His movie Jakub (1977) was written by Katarína Slobodová and stars Filip Renc, Ladislav Mrkvicka, and Ladislav Bohác. The story is about 11-year old Jakub living in a children’s home with his father who has been "away" for four years. The film A Splotch in the Fairy-tale (1983), aka "Kanka do pohádky," is about innocuous children's books. He later directed The Cat Prince in 1979, about Radek and Terezka who take children's imagination from real experiences.

His other films include Leave Me Alone (1978), a christening celebration in a big garden with a tragic epilogue, co-writen by Jan Kratochvíl and starring Filip Renc, Dagmar Bláhová, and Miroslav Horácek; Kocicí princ (1979) starring Pavel Hachle, Zaneta Fuchsová, and Winfried Glatzeder; Blob to the Fairytale (1981); Oof - They Are Here (1988); and Lucie and the Miracles (1970).

Koval remained faithful to children films. He died at the age of 60 in Prague, Czechia.
