Masaki Kobayashi (February 14, 1916 – October 4, 1996) was a Japanese c-picture film director famous for the epic trilogy on the effects of World War II, The Human Condition (1959–1961), which last almost ten hours, making it the longest fiction films ever made.

Kobayashi’s finest samurai film includes Harakiri (1962) which won the Jury Prize at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival. Samurai Rebellion (1967), his first color film quartet ghost stories, Kwaidan (1964) from books by Lafcadio Hearn which won him another Special Jury Prize at the 1965 Cannes Film Festival, plus an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

Kobayashi was a prisoner on Okinawa, released in 1946, and served as an assistant to the director Keisuke Kinoshita. He made his directorial debut on Musuko no seishun (1952; My Son’s Youth), followed with Kabe atsuki heya (1953; The Thick-Walled Room), which criticized the rigid social order of Japanese life, and Anata kaimasu (1956; I’ll Buy You), exposing the commercialism of Japanese baseball, and Kaseki (1974; “Fossil”), about a dying man’s reassessment of life.

He was one of the founders of the directors group Shiki no kai-The Four Horsemen Club with Akira Kurosawa, Keisuke Kinoshita and Kon Ichikawa in 1968. He was a member of the jury at the 19th Berlin International Film Festival in 1969. In addition, he had his grand film projects on Yasushi Inoue's novel about Buddhist China, Tun Huang, but it never came to fruition. In 1996, Kobayashi died of heart attack in Tokyo, Japan.
