American martial arts film Kill Bill: Volume 1 debuted in 2003. The revenge tale was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and stars Uma Thurman as The Bride who is the victim of an attempted assasination on her wedding day. in a chapel in El Paso, Texas. The Bride swears revenge on a the team of assassins played by Lucy Liu, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, Vivica A. Fox, and their leader “Bill” (David Carradine) - The Bride's former lover who shot her in the head, thinking he killed her and her unborn child. The Bride - aka Beatrix Kiddo - journeys to many places, including to Tokyo where she battles the yakuza. The Bride, formelry know as Black Mamba in the Deadly Viper Assasination Squad, will stop at nothing until she gets to Kill Bill.

Tarantino was inspired by Shaw Brothers Studio and included an anime sequence by Production I.G. The two part film series was intended to be a single production but was divided in two. The Bride's iconic yellow tracksuit, her helmet and motorcycle were inspired by Bruce Lee in Game of Death. The diverse soundtrack background includes country music and Spaghetti Western scores by Ennio Morricone, along with Bernard Herrmann's theme from the film Twisted Nerve. The Japanese anime sequence features inspiration from Golgo 13: The Professional (1983) and Wicked City (1987). Indian director Anurag Kashyap also revealed that Kamal Hassan's film Aalavandhan (2001) was another influence for the film. Kill Bill: Volume 2 was released the following year in 2004, and the films were Tarantino's highest-grossing films until Inglourious Basterds in 2009.

Uma Thurman received a Golden Globe Best Actress nomination in 2004, a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. The film Kill Bill: Volume 1 was placed in Empire Magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Films of All Time.
