  • Welcome to the official Film/Art Gallery collection of original Irvin Kershner vintage movie posters from his critically acclaimed catalog of timeless cinematic contributions.

Irvin Kershner was born Isadore Kershner in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 29th of April in the year 1923. He was an American television and film director who worked in various genres. His best-known work would be The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 from the Star Wars series.

The filmmaker attended Temple University’s Tyler School of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Irvin Kershner then went to New York and Provincetown to study with Hans Hofmann, a famous painting teacher. He later studied photography in Los Angeles at the Art Center College of Design. In 1950, Kershner started his career producing documentaries for the United States Information Service in the Middle East. He then turned to television, photographing and directing a documentary series titled “Confidential File”. The future Empire Strikes Back director helmed Stakeout on Dope Street in 1958, produced by Roger Corman, who gave him his first break. Social alienation and human weaknesses are the most common and noteworthy themes of his works.

Irvin Kershner was known in his field for his quirky directing work within independent drama films while, at the same time, working as an influential professor at the University of Southern California. He transitioned into high-budget blockbuster films, such as The Empire Strikes Back, the James Bond adaptation Never Say Never Again, and RoboCop 2. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards and nominations.

Kershner died in his Los Angeles home after his three-and-a-half-year battle with lung cancer. He had been working on photography projects before dying. Briefly, before his passing, he was given the Lifetime Career Award at the 2010 Saturn Awards. He was also awarded at the 1981 Saturn Award for Best Director in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back.

Film/Art Gallery’s collection of original Irvin Kershner movie posters include works from The Empire Strikes Back. The Irvin Kersher collection also includes Eyes Of Laura Mars starring Faye Dunaway.
