Welcome to the official Film/Art Gallery collection of original Elia Kazan vintage movie posters from his critically acclaimed catalog of timeless cinematic creations.
Elia Kazan was a Greek-American filmmaker, producer, writer, and actor, dubbed as "one of the most honored and influential directors in Broadway and Hollywood history" by The New York Times. He was born on September 7th, 1909, in Constantinople, now Istanbul, to Cappadocian Greek parents. He attended Williams College and Yale School of Drama. He, then, acted professionally for eight years and joined the Group Theatre in 1932. In 1947, Kazan co-founded the Actors Studio with Robert Lewis and Cheryl Crawford, the studio introduced “Method Acting” under the direction of Lee Strasberg.
The filmmaker's films typically depicted personal or social issues of special concern to him. Elia Kazan's first such "issue" film was Gentleman's Agreement (1947), with Gregory Peck, which dealt with anti-Semitism in America. The film received eight Oscar nominations and three wins, including Kazan's first for Best Director. His next film was Pinky, one of the first films in mainstream Hollywood to address racial discrimination against African Americans. In 1954, On the Waterfront was one of his creations, and it was a film about union corruption on the New York harbor waterfront. In 1955, A Streetcar Named Desire, an adaptation of the stage play which Elia Kazan had also directed, received twelve Oscar nominations, winning four, and was Marlon Brando's breakthrough role. Kazan also directed John Steinbeck's East of Eden in 1955, which launched James Dean to movie audiences.
Elia Kazan influenced the films of the 1950s and 1960s with his controversial, issue-driven subjects. "Without question, the best director we have in America, capable of performing miracles with the actors he uses" was what Director Stanley Kubrick stated about him. In 2010, Martin Scorsese co-directed the documentary film A Letter to Elia as a personal commemoration to Kazan. Elia Kazan died from natural causes on September 28th, 2003, in his Manhattan apartment, at the age of 94.
