    Helmut Käutner was a German film director active mostly in the 1940s and 1950s. He started his career at the end of the Weimar Republic and released his first major films in Nazi Germany.

    His film Der Hauptmann von Köpenick in 1956 was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 29th Academy Awards. His film The Rest is Silence in 1959 was entered into the 9th Berlin International Film Festival.

    He directed the following films: Kitty and the World Conference in 1939; Woman Made to Measure in 1940; Clothes Make the Man in 1940; Goodbye, Franziska in 1941; Anuschka and We Make Music, both in 1942; Romance in a Minor Key in 1943; Große Freiheit Nr. 7 in 1944; Under the Bridges in 1946; In Those Days in 1947; The Original Sin in 1948; Royal Children in 1950; The Orplid Mystery in 1950; White Shadows in 1951; Captain Bay-Bay in 1953; The Last Bridge in 1954; Portrait of an Unknown Woman in 1954; Ludwig II: Glanz und Ende eines Königs in 1955; Des Teufels General in 1955; Sky Without Stars in 1955; The Girl from Flanders in 1956; The Captain from Köpenick in 1956; The Zurich Engagement in 1957; Love from Paris in 1957; The Restless Years in 1958; Der Schinderhannes in 1958; A Stranger in My Arms in 1959; The Rest Is Silence in 1959; The Goose of Sedan in 1959; A Glass of Water in 1960; Black Gravel and The Dream of Lieschen Mueller both in 1961; Redhead in 1962; The House in Montevideo in 1963; Lausbubengeschichten in 1964; and Die Feuerzangenbowle in 1970.

    Helmut Käutner was born on 25 March 1908 in Düsseldorf, Germany and died on 20 April 1980 in Castellina in Chianti, Province of Siena, Italy.
