    Philip Kaufman is a film director and screenwriter who has directed fifteen films over a career spanning more than six decades. He has been described as an “iconoclast” and a “maverick,” remarkable for his versatility and independence. He is considered an "auteur", whose movie have always conveyed his personal vision.

    His work include various genres, such as realism, horror, fantasy, erotica, Westerns, underworld, crime and inner city gangs. His movie The Wanderers in 1979 has been fadmired by a considerable group of cinephile. But his greatest achievement was Tom Wolfe’s true-life The Right Stuff in 1983, which he received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Sound Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Actor in Supporting Role, Best Art Direction, and Best Cinematography. The same movie was also nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in 1984. Scott Glenn was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for the New York Film Critics’ Award.

    Philip Kaufman first feature film was Goldstein in 1964. The movie won at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival for the Prix de la Nouvell Critique (New Critics Prize). He directed and co-wrote the film The Unbearable Lightness of Being in 1988, where he was nominated for an Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay. Kaufman directed the HBO biographical movie Hemingway and Gellhorn in 2012, in which the film was nominated for 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, including one for Kaufman for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie, or Dramatic Special.

    Philip Kaufman was born on October 23, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois. He lives in San Francisco where he runs his production company, Walrus and Associates.
