Jonathan Kaplan (November 25, 1947) is a French-born American director and producer. He is the son of composer Sol Kaplan and actress Frances Heflin, and the nephew of Van Heflin. As a child actor, he took part in the Broadway production of The Dark at the Top of the Stairs, directed by Elia Kazan, and in off-Broadway production Rumplestillskin by Elaine May in 1964. He was a student of Martin Scorsese at NYU and made an the award-winning short film, Stanley (1965).

He was later offered by Roger Corman to direct. His first film was Night Call Nurses (1972), followed by The Student Teachers (1973), which he co-wrote and co-edited. He made The Slams (1973) for Corman's brother Gene and directed Truck Turner (1974), another big hit. He also directed movies for television and music videos, including for John Cougar Mellencamp and Rod Stewart's "Infatuation" in 1984. He also directed the 1983 drag racing biopic Heart Like a Wheel and the science fiction-thriller Project X (1987). His legal drama film The Accused (1988) earned actress Jodie Foster her first Oscar for Best Actress and a Golden Bear nomination during the 39th Berlin International Film Festival. Kaplan also received Emmy nominations for directing and producing episodes for the television series ER.

Kaplan was flooded with feature film directing jobs, including the Immediate Family (1989) and Unlawful Entry (1992). His direction of Michelle Pfeiffer in Love Field (1992) garnered her Best Actress Academy Award nomination in 1993. His final theatrical feature film was Brokedown Palace (1999) and primarily continued his career as a television director.

Jonathan Kaplan poster collection also includes a 1 Sheet (27x41) of Over the Hedge Movie, with artwork by Charles Gehm, a cult drama about teens (including a young Matt Dillon) running wild; the film and was produced in 1979 but not given a general theatrical release until 1982.
