  • Welcome to the official Film/Art Gallery collection of original Hal Kanter vintage movie posters from his critically acclaimed catalog of timeless cinematic contributions.

Director Hal Kanter (18 December 1918 - 6 November 2011) was also a writer born in Georgia to a Jewish family. He started out writing variety shows for television in the early 1950s and was a producer for Elvis Presley and for other comedy actors, like Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis. He started his career by peddling jokes to Eddie Cantor’s radio program, although he was not hired by Cantor. Nevertheless, his talent was recognized by one of his writers, Hugh Wedlock, Jr., who paid Kanter $10 per week to write jokes, which he eventually resold to Cantor. He helped turn Tennessee Williams’s play into The Rose Tattoo film version and Let's Make Love.

Kanter was the supreme creator and executive producer of the television series Julia and the landmark comedy drama series All in the Family (1971), written by Brian Rathjen, which tells a story about a bigoted working class man constantly squabbling with his family over the important issues of the day, created by Norman Lear and starring Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor) with Jean Stapleton and Rob Reiner. His autobiography, So Far, So Funny: My Life in Show Business, was published by McFarland & Company, Inc., (1999) of Jefferson, North Carolina.

The book chronicles and highlights his early life and struggles in Hollywood during his early years. It emphasizes his eventual success in show business in general and being a comedy writer. In 2011, Kanter died of pneumonia at his home in Encino, California at the age of 92.
