    Tom Kalin is a screenwriter, producer, film director, and film professor at European Graduate School in Saas-Fee. His first feature Swoon is considered an essential part of the New Queer Cinema. He has created a number of short films, such as Behold Goliath or the Boy with Filthy Laugh, Third Known Nest, and Tom Kalin Videoworks: Volume 2.

    He has gathered several awards and nominations in Berlin International Film Festival in 1992, Sundance Film Festival, Tribeca Film Fest, and New York Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in 2002. He won the Gotham Awards Open Palm Award for Swoon in 1992, and he has been nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards.

    Tom Kalin has directed the following films: Savage Grace in 2007, The Robots of Sodom in 2003, Third Known Nest in 1999, Plain Pleasures in 1996, Nomads in 1994, Geoffrey Beene 30 in 1993, Nation and Swoon both in 1992.

    His last project was Savage Grace in 1972, about the murder case of Barbara Daly Baekeland, and stars Julianne Moore as Barbara.

    Tom Kalin was born on March 4, 1962, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Arts in painting from the University of Illinois in 1984 and Masters of Fine Arts in Photography and Video from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1987. He has taught graduate-level filmmaking classes at Columbia University of the Arts and is presently lecturing at the European Graduate School in Switzerland. Tom Kalin is a 2011 Guggenheim Fellow.
