Joseph Walton Losey III was an American theatre and film director, screenwriter, and producer. He was blacklisted by Hollywood in the 1950s. He moved to Europe where he made the rest of his films, mostly in the United Kingdom. Among the most successful were three films with screenplays by Harold Pinter: The Servant (1963), Accident (1967) and The Go-Between (1971).

He first directed the controversial failure Little Old Boy in 1933. In 1936, he directed Triple-A Plowed Under followed by Injunction Granter on Broadway.

His film in 1976, Monsieur Klein, won Best Film and Best Director at the Cesar Awards and was nominated in the same categories for the 1979 opera adaptation Don Giovanni. He was a two-time BAFTA nominee and a fourth-time nominee for both Golden Lion and Palme d’Or.

He won the Best Foreign Director by the Nastro d’Argento for his film The Servant in 1966. The following year, he won the Jury Grand Prize in the Cannes Film Festival in 1967 for the film Accident. He also won, at the Cannes Film Festival, Best Film in 1971 for the film The Go Between. The same movie won at the Sant Jordi Awards for Best Foreign Film in 1972.
