British writer John Christopher (April 16, 1922 - Feb. 3, 2012) was known professionally as Christopher Samuel Youd, famous for writing science-fiction novels The White Mountains (1967), The City of Gold and Lead (1967), and The Pool of Fire (1968). He also worked on more adult-oriented books, such as The Winter Swan (1949), The Death of Grass (1956), adapted as a film by Cornel Wilde under its American title, No Blade of Grass (1970), The World in Winter (1962), A Wrinkle in the Skin (1965), The Lotus Caves (1969), The Guardians (1970), Empty World (1977), developed into a 1987 TV movie in Germany, and A Dusk of Demons (1993). He used the pen name John Christopher and many pseudonyms, inclduing Stanley Winchester, Hilary Ford, William Godfrey, William Vine, Peter Graaf, Peter Nichols, and Anthony Rye.
Christopher’s writings have been adapted to film, and the hugely popular The Tripods (1984) partially developed into a British TV series. His short fictions have appeared in 'Weird Tales', 'Astounding Science Fiction', and 'Galaxy Science Fiction'. In 1988, he wrote the long-awaited prequel to his 'Tripods' trilogy, 'When the Tripods Came'.
John received the Guardian Prize in 1971 and the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis in 1976. He died in Bath, Somerset, on February 2012 from bladder cancer. The Lotus Caves was in development in 2007, directed by Rpin Suwannath from Walden Media. Later, in 2013, a TV pilot titled High Moon based on The Lotus Caves was developed by Bryan Fuller, released on SyFy and Netflix in 2014.
