    American painter John Alvin (November 24, 1948 – February 6, 2008) was also a renowned cinematic artist who illustrated posters for more than 135 films, beginning with Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles (1974) - which he depicted Mel Brooks with a headdress inscribed with the phrase, Kosher for Passover; he also worked as an animator.

    Alvin went on to work on a number of Brooks' later films, including Young Frankenstein, also released in 1974. His iconic posters inlcude his work for Steven Spielberg's 1982 film, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. The poster shows E.T.'s finger touching the finger of his human friend, and he was inspired by Michelangelo's painting, The Creation of Adam. His work for film studios include Entertainment, Disney Studios, Lucasfilm Ltd., New Line Cinema, and Warner Bros., inclduing posters for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Harry Potter film series, and Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean films. He was the poster designer for the novel's film adaptation The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005).

    The Art of John Alvin, a book by Andrea Alvin, was published on August 26, 2014 by Titan Books. ArtInsights exclusively retailed his work to the public. The book used artwork, as well as unseen paintings and sketches, with a foreword by Jeffrey Katzenberg and commentary by his widow. His collection of Europe tour posters is titled Images of an Era (1945-1975). John Alvin died of a heart attack in 2008.
