Welcome to the official Film/Art Gallery collection of original Jaromil Jires vintage movie posters from his critically acclaimed catalog of timeless cinematic contributions.
Jaromil Jires (December 10, 1935 - October 26, 2001) was a writer and director, identified with the Czechoslovak New Wave movement in the 1960s, noted for often selecting controversial subject matter and employing non-professional actors. His degree in photography and film direction from the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) made him famous for The Joke (1969), adapted from a novel by Milan Kundera, about Ludvik Jahn expelled from the Czech Communist Party. The film was produced during the 1968 Prague Spring and was released after the Warsaw Pact invasion but was then banned by authorities.
His other feature work Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970) was a 19th century Gothic style film, based on a novel by Vítězslav Nezval, concerning the onset of menstruation and the sexual awakening of a thirteen-year-old girl. He directed My Love to the Swallows (1971), a World War II film about a Czech resistance fighter. His 1982 film Incomplete Eclipse was entered into the 33rd Berlin International Film Festival. His film The Young Man and Moby Dick (1979) was entered into the 11th Moscow International Film Festival.
Jires earnestly succeeded and worked on art documentaries but returned to the international scene in 1991, following the fall of the communist regime with Labyrinth (1991). He continued making films, including opera documentaries and ballet for television through the 1980s and 1990s. He died in 2001 at the age of 65 in a road accident in Prague.
