    Jean-Jacques Annaud was born on October 1, 1943 in Juvisy-sur-Orge, Essone, France. He is a French film director, producer, and screenwriter. He graduated from the well known film school the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinematographiques (IDHEC) in Paris in 1964.

    He is best known for directing Quest for Fire, a prehistoric fantasy adventure film in 1981, The Name of the Rose, an Italian-German-French mystery and historical film in 1986, The Bear in 1988, a French adventure drama film, The Lover, a 1992 erotic drama movie, Seven Years in Tibet, American biographical war drama in 1997, Enemy at the Gates, a 2001 war film, Black Gold in 2011, a French epic historical war film, and Wolf Totem in 2015, a drama film.

    Jean-Jacques Annaud has received several awards: Knight of the National Order of Merit, Film Award of the National French Academy, Winner of the Charlemagne Medal for European Media, and Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters. He has been internationally awarded and honoured. He won Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for his movie Black and White in Color in 1976. He also received Cesar Award for the Quest of Fire in 1982 as Best Film, and Best Director. In 1987, The Name of the Rose won the Cesar Award for Best Foreign Film. The Bear received a nomination for best film and won Best Director for Cesar Award in 1988. His movie The Lover received nomination. His movie in 1987, The Name of the Rose, won David di Donatello award. And his movie Enemy at the Gates was nominated for European Film Academy.
