The Gospel According to St. Matthew is an Italian historical drama film in 1964, directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, starred by Enrique Irazoqui as Christ, Margherita Caruso as Mary, Marcello Morante as Joseph and Ferruccio Nuzzo as Matthew. It is a cinematic rendition of the story of Jesus according to the Gospel of Matthew, from the Nativity through the Resurrection. The Vatican City newspaper L'Osservatore Romano called The Gospel According to St. Matthew film the best Christ film ever made.

In Galilee during the Roman Empire, along a rocky, barren coastline Jesus begins teaching, primarily using parables. Jesus of Nazareth travels around the country with his disciples, healing the blind, raising the dead, exorcising demons, and declaring the arrival of the Kingdom of God and the salvation of Israel. He claims to be the Son of God and therefore, prophesied Messiah of Israel, which brings him into direct confrontation with the Jewish temple leaders. He is arrested, handed over to the Romans, and charged with sedition against the Roman state of which he is declared innocent by the Roman governor of Judea, but, still crucified at the command of the Temple leaders. He rises from the dead after three days.
The film won the OCIC Award and the Silver Lion as well as the Grand Prize at the International Catholic Film Office.
