    Based on the 1958 novel by Jim Thompson, The Getaway is a 1972 American action thriller film. Directed by Sam Peckinpah and written by Walter Hill, and stars Steve McQueen, Ali MacGraw, Al Lettieri, Sally Struthers, and Ben Johnson.

    The plot centers imprisoned robber Carter "Doc" McCoy (McQueen). His devoted wife Carol (MacGraw) conspires for his release with Jack Benyon, a corrupt businessman with a condition to take part in a bank robbery. Two of his henchmen, Rudy and Frank attempt a double-cross, killing Frank. Doc shoots Rudy and takes the money but, Rudy only wounded having secretly worn a bulletproof vest. Doc meets with Beynon who ordered Carol to kill Doc. However, Carol shot and killed Beynon instead. After a bitter quarrel, the couple flees for the border at El Paso.

    Rudy finds company with Fran whom she kidnapped and move on to El Paso hotel where Doc and Carol checked in. Doc urges Carol to dress quickly so they can escape, quickly sneaks up behind armed Rudy while Fran poses as a delivery girl and knocks both of them.

    Beynon's brother and his thugs arrive as the McCoys try to leave but all of them are killed. After crossing the border, Doc and Carol pay the cowboy $30,000 for his truck and travel to Mexico.

    Despite the critic’s negative reviews, it became a box office hit earning over $36 million and the seventh highest-grossing film of 1972 with a remake in 1994 starring Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger.
