Tron (1982) is an American science fiction action-adventure film written and directed by Steven Lisberger, based from a story by Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird. The film stars Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner, Cindy Morgan, and Barnard Hughes. Bridges is a video game developer who is transported inside the ENCOM's mainframe system software world and attempts to escape with programmer Alan Bradley and his girlfriend engineer Lora Baines, who discover that the MCP has closed off their access to projects and expanded into a powerful virtual intelligence and illegal transactions.

The film was inspired back to 1976, when Lisberger became intrigued with video games upon seeing Pong. He worked with producer Donald Kushner and set up an animation studio for the film Tron. Lisberger decided to include live-action elements, although various film studios had rejected the film, but it was Walt Disney Productions who agreed to finance and finally distribute the film, applying a combination of backlit animation and the live action computer animation. 

Tron received nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Sound at the 55th Academy Awards, and in 1997, Ken Perlin won an Academy Award for Technical Achievement for his invention of Perlin noise for Tron. The film also inspired John Lasseter, head of Pixar and Disney's animation group, to see the potential of computer-generated imagery in the production of animated films, referring to “Toy Story." The American Film Institute nominated this film for its Top 10 Science Fiction Films list in 2008.
