    David Robert Jones better known as David Bowie (8 January 1947 ‚Äď 10 January 2016) was a leading figure in the music industry. An English actor, singer-songwriter regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. His innovative work with music during the 1970s with his music and stagecraft got him a lifetime record sales estimated at over 100 million records worldwide making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

    Bowie studied music, art, and design including layout and typesetting. He formed his first band, the Konrads in 1962 at the age of 15. He shelved his solo career in 1989, and came out a hard-rocking quartet, Tin Machine and worked with guitarist Reeves Gabrels. The line-up was completed by Tony and Hunt Sales for their contribution, on bass and drums respectively. David was awarded ten platinum album certifications in the UK and released eleven number-one albums. In the US, he received five platinum and nine gold certifications and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

    In October 2001, Bowie opened a charity event concert in New York City to benefit the victims of the September 11 attacks, with the performance of Simon & Garfunkel's "America". The Rolling Stone placed him among its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and was dubbed "The Greatest Rock Star Ever" by the magazine.

    He died with liver cancer in January 2016, two days after the release of his twenty-fifth studio album, Blackstar.
