The film was produced and distributed by New Line Cinema with co-production of WingNut Films, an international venture between New Zealand and the United States. The film was entirely shot in New Zealand.

The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy: The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001, The Two Towers in 2002, and The Return of the King in 2003. It is widely known as one of the greatest and most influential film series ever made. It was a huge success and is among the highest-grossing film series of all time, earning $2.981 billion in worldwide. Each film was critically admired and heavily awarded. It won 17 out of 30 Academy Award nominations. The first series won 4 nominations at the 74th Academy Awards, the sequel won 2 awards from the 75th Academy Awards from six nominations, and the third movie won every nominations at the 76th Academy Awards. 

The Fellowship of the Ring was released in 2001 and earned around $887.8 million worldwide. The second film, Two Towers, released in 2002, grossed with $951.2 million worldwide. Lastly, the Return of the King, released in 2003, grossed $1 billion worldwide. 

Each film won Best Dramatic Presentation at the Hugo Awards, the MTV Movie Award for Movie of the Year, and Best Fantasy Film at the Saturn Award. The first and third films also won for Best Film at the BAFTA Award . The New York Film Critics Circle awarded The Return of the King at the 2003 Awards Ceremony for its Best Picture Award.
