Cannabis is a crime thriller film, directed by Pierre Koralnik and starring Serge Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin, and Curd Jurgens.  It is a co-production between West Germany, France and Italy.

After collaborating on Anna, a television movie featuring Anna Karina in 1967, Gainsbourg and French director Pierre Koralnik decided to work on another movie. What would eventually evolve into Cannabis came about from seeing Gainsbourg and his then-lover Jane Birkin working together in the 1969 film, Slogan, directed by Pierre Grimblat. All of the music for Cannabis was written and composed by the leading man after the film had been shot, with assistance from arranger Jean-Claude Vannier, with whom Gainsbourg would again collaborate the following year on Histoire de Melody Nelson.

In the story, a killer is working for the American Mafia. After an assignment in New York for his employers, he takes the plane back to Paris and, during the flight, he gets to know Jane, the rich daughter of an ambassador. Upon arrival at Orly Airport, the assassin is seriously harmed by the men of French drug kingpin Henri Emery. He manages to get away and takes refuge at Jane's. Passion sets in between the young lady and the killer. This is when sex becomes intertwined with blood and death.

On September 2, 1970, Cannabis was released in France, and later on February 2, 1973, the crime thriller was released in Italy. Upon its release, Cannabis was acknowledged positively.
