Richard Samuel Benjamin is an American filmmaker and actor. He has appeared in numerous well-known films, like Goodbye, Columbus in 1969, his first lead role in the film came with critical and commercial hit, based on the novel by Philip Roth, Catch-22 in 1970, Westworld in 1973, and The Sunshine Boys in 1975. After directing for television, his debut film as a director was the comedy film My Favorite Year in 1982, with Peter O’Toole. The film was warmly received, earning O’Toole a nomination for Oscars for Best Actor and launched Benjamin as a director. His other works include City Heat in 1984 starring Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds, The Monkey Pit in 1986 starring Tom Hanks, and Made in America in 1993 with Whoopi Goldberg.

Richard Benjamin was born in New York City, on May 22nd, 1938. He was the son of Samuel Roger Benjamin, a garment industry worker. He attended the High School of Performing Arts and graduated from Northwestern University, where he participated in numerous plays and studied at the Northwestern theatre school.

After directing films, Richard Benjamin also directed TV series, including The Pentagon Wars in 1998, Tourist Trap in 1999, and Laughter on the 23rd Floor in 2001. In 2006, he directed the award-winning cable television drama A Little Thing Called Murder starring Judy Davis. The drama was based on the true story of Kenny and Sante Kimes, mother and son grifters, and killers.
