  • Welcome to the official Film/Art Gallery collection of original Belle De Jour vintage movie posters. Film/Art Gallery offers a wide range of movie posters and artwork for the cinema's ultimate drama film.

Belle de Jour is a 1967 drama film directed by Luis Buñuel, most commercial film and one of the most erotic movies of the 1960s, though largely devoid of nudity. Starring Catherine Deneuve as Séverine Serizy alias Belle de Jour, Jean Sorel as Pierre Serizy, and Michel Piccoli as Henri Husson. Based on the 1928 novel Belle de jour by Joseph Kessel, the film is about a frigid young housewife who spends her midweek afternoons as a high-class prostitute, while her husband is at work.

Séverine, a beautiful, wealthy, sheltered new bride in a socially advantageous but boring marriage. Despite indulging in a subversive fantasy life, she refuses to sleep with her husband Pierre Serizy. When she hears about a brothel that employs housewives to ply their skills in secret, she makes the ominous decision to fulfill her fantasies by serving as a prostitute.

The title of the film is a pun on the French term, "belle de nuit" ("lady of the night", i.e., a prostitute), as SĂ©verine works during the day under the pseudonym "Belle de Jour". Her nickname can also be interpreted as a reference to the French name of the daylily (Hemerocallis), meaning "beauty of the day", a flower that blooms only during the day.

Belle de Jour is one of Buñuel's most successful and famous films. The film won the Golden Lion and the Pasinetti Award for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival in 1967.

Film/Art Gallery’s collection of original Belle De Jour movie posters include a 16-page press book for the U.S. release. Also included is a German Belle De Jour poster designed by Hans Hillmann.
