  • Welcome to the official Film/Art Gallery collection of original Hal Ashby vintage movie posters from his critically acclaimed catalog of timeless cinematic creations.

William Hal Ashby was an American film director and editor. The fourth and youngest child of Eileen Ireta (Hetzler) and James Thomas Ashby born on September 2, 1929.

As Ashby was entering adult life, he moved from Utah to California and became an assistant film editor through a long apprenticeship. His career rocketed when he served as the editor of The Loved One (1965), an adaptation of the Evelyn Waugh novel. For 16 years, Ashby directed numerous acclaimed and popular films; Harold and Maude (1971), The Last Detail (1973), and the social satire Being There (1979). American songwriter and guitarist Guthrie Thomas called Ashby "one of the finest motion picture directors of the 20th century." Ashby won an Academy Award for In the Heat of the Night (1967).

Ashby turned to television and worked on several projects before being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Warren Beatty, his longtime friend advised Ashby to seek medical care after he complained of various ailments, including undiagnosed phlebitis. His illness rapidly spread to his lungs, colon, and liver. He died on December 27, 1988, at his home in Malibu, California. The cause of Ashby’s decline may never be known, though some attributed it to drugs and alcohol.

Film/Art Gallery’s collection of original Hal Ashby movie posters include his film Coming Home starring Bruce Dern and Jane Fonda. The collection also includes Hal Ashby poster for his most controversial film Shampoo, starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie.
