  • Welcome to the official Film/Art Gallery collection of original Bette Davis vintage movie posters from her critically acclaimed catalog of timeless cinematic performances.

Bette Davis (Ruth Elizabeth "Bette" Davis, April 5th, 1908 – October 6th, 1989) was a versatile, American actress of television, film and theater. With a career spanning 60 years and 100 acting credits, she is viewed as one of the greatest actresses in Hollywood history. She was well-known for playing a cold, sardonic character, and was famous for her performances in a range of film genres, from contemporary crime melodramas to historical films, suspense horror, and comedies, although her greater successes were in romantic dramas. A recipient of two Academy Awards, she was the first thespian to garner ten nominations.

Davis developed a taste for acting while attending her mother’s alma mater, Cushing Academy in Massachusetts. After some unsuccessful films, she had her critical breakthrough playing a bad-mannered waitress in Of Human Bondage (1934). The next year, her strong performance as a down-and-out actress in Dangerous (1935) did land her first Best Actress nomination and won the award.

Davis collapsed during the American Cinema Awards in 1989, and later discovered that her cancer had returned. She recovered to travel to Spain, where she was honored at the Donostia-San Sebastián International Film Festival, but during her visit, her health rapidly deteriorated. Too weak to make the long journey back to the U.S., she traveled to France, where she died on October 6, 1989, at 11:35 PM, at the American Hospital in Neuilly-sur-Seine. Davis was 81 years old.
