American epic space opera film Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) is directed and produced by J. J. Abrams with Bryan Burk and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy also serving as producers. This entry in the Star Wars saga was co-written by Lawrence Kasdan and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film is the seventh episode of Skywalker saga and the first installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy following Return of the Jedi in 1983. The cast includes Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa and Luke's twin sister, Adam Driver as dark warrior Kylo Ren, Daisy Ridley as Rey, and John Boyega as Finn. The film also features Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Max von Sydow.

The film was set thirty years after the Galactic Civil War and follows Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron and Han Solo's search for Luke Skywalker with the Resistance led by General Leia Organa, and the Rebel Alliance Kylo Ren and the First Order. The film received positive reviews although some critics found it too similar to Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope from 1977. The film became the highest-grossing film of 2015 with a net profit of over $780 million. It received five nominations at the 88th Academy Awards, four nominations at the 69th British Academy Film Awards where it won Best Special Visual Effects award, BAFTA Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film. The Star Wars entry also nabbed a Rising Star Award for John Boyega and honors for Best Director J. J. Abrams at the 21st Empire Awards. Daisy Ridley also won Best Female Newcomer.
