American film director and producer George Sherman (July 14, 1908 – March 15, 1991) started at Warner Bros. studios on the silent comedy Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1928) and later on Mack Sennett comedies The Lion and the House (1932) and Hypnotized (1932) and completed several shorts in 1933.

He assisted on the films Sunset Range (1935) and Rainbow's End (1935), later going to the Monogram company for Honeymoon Limited (1935) and to Republic for the western film Melody Trail (1935), The Border Patrolman (1936), and Hollywood Cowboy in 1937. Sherman directed The Three Mesquiteers, Purple Riders (1938) and many more. In 1939 he did The Night Riders, Cowboys from Texas, and Covered Wagon Days (1940), The Apache Kid (1941), and then non- Westerns, such as X Marks the Spot (1942), A Scream in the Dark (1943), and Mystery Broadcast in 1943.

Sherman directed for Columbia Pictures on The Bandit of Sherwood Forest (1945) and Sword in the Desert (1949) with Jeff Chandler. He returned to Westerns with Comanche Territory (1950), Battle of Powder River (1951), The Battle at Apache Pass (1952), and Back at the Front, in the same year. 

Sherman did a pirate film with Errol Flynn and Maureen O'Hara, Against All Flags (1952), Elfego Baca: Move Along, Mustangers (1959), Wounds of Hunger (1963), and his last feature was Big Jake (1971) with John Wayne. He died of heart and kidney failure at the age of 82, with his wife Cleo Ronson Sherman and four children. Sherman received the Bronze Wrangler Award for producing The Comancheros in 1962 and the Golden Boot Award in 1988
