American film director, writer, and actor Richard C. Sarafian (April 28, 1930 - September 18, 2013), whose birth name was Richard Caspar Sarafian, compiled a versatile career that started as a reporter for an Army news service and became friends with Robert Altman, who was the brother of his wife, Helen Joan Altman.

His greatest success as director starts with the Living Doll episode of The Twilight Zone. In 1965, he received his first directing credit for Andy (1969), starring Norman Alden, Run Wild, Run Free, a British drama film starring John Mills and Mark Lester, written by David Rook, based on his novel The White Colt, Man in the Wilderness in 1971, and The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing in 1973. He played a gangster in Bugsy in 1991 and a hitman in Bulworth in 1998, starring Warren Beatty and Halle Berry.

He directed the iconic film Vanishing Point ( 971), starring Barry Newman and Cleavon Little, who served as inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof (2007), The Next Man (1976), he portrays Mafia figures Jack Dragna in Bugsy (1991) and Paul Castellano in Gotti (1996), Blue Streak (1999), and voiced the animated God Beaver character in Dr. Dolittle and in 2001.

Sarafian and Helen had five children, actor Richard Sarafian Jr, Deran Sarafian, Damon B. Sarafian, Tedi Sarafian, and Catherine Sarafian. He died of pneumonia at the age of 83 in California on 2013 while recovering from a broken back.
