Joseph Ruben is an American producer, screenwriter, and film director. His film The Stepfather in 1987, starring Terry O'Quinn, Jill Schoelen, and Shelley Hack, have become cult classics.

He was the producer, co-screenwriter and director for The Sister-in-Law in 1974, The Pom Pom Girls, Joyride in 1977, Dreamscape in 1984, The Good Son in 1993, and Penthouse North in 2013.

In 1990, he directed the high-grossing films such as: Sleeping with the Enemy with Julia Roberts, Patrick Bergin and Kevin Anderson; The Good Son written by Ian McEwan and starred by Macaulay Culkin, Elijah Wood, and Wendy Crewson; Money Train screenplay by Doug Richardson and David Loughery starring Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, Jennifer Lopez; and Return to Paradise written by Wesley Strick and Bruce Robinson starring Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix.

The Stepfather earned him the Critics Award. The film was written by Donald E. Westlake, with the lead characters Terry O'Quinn, Shelley Hack, and Jill Schoelen. It also received several nominations from the Saturn Awards, Edgar Awards, International Fantasy Film Award, Independent Spirit Awards, Young Artist Awards, and Terry O'Quinn, winning 3rd place for Best Actor at NSFC Award.

His movie True Believer was nominated for Best Mystery Motion Picture at the 1990 Edgar Awards. And his film Dreamscape, whom he co-wrote with David Loughery and Chuck Russell, starring Dennis Quaid, Max von Sydow, Christopher Plummer, Kate Capshaw, Eddie Albert, and David Patrick Kelly, was a box office hit, grossing 12.1 million dollars on a 6 million dollar budget.
