Welcome to the official Film/Art Gallery collection of original Charles Laughton vintage movie posters from his critically acclaimed catalog of timeless cinematic performances.

Charles Laughton was a film and stage artist, who studied in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and professionally first seen on the stage in 1926. He performed a wide range of classical and modern parts, creating an impact in Shakespeare at the Old Vic.

Laughton participated in amateur theatricals in Scarborough and also started working in the family hotel. On April 28, 1926, Charles made his first professional appearance at the Barnes Theatre, and also appeared in at London’s Gaiety Theatre in May as Osip in the comedy The Government Inspector.

A film that Laughton directed has been cited among critics as one of the best of the 1950s. The film is The Night of the Hunter, starring Lillian Gish, Shelley Winters and Robert Mitchum and was produced by Laughton’s friend Paul Gregory.

Because of his role in Witness for the Prosecution on 1957, Laughton received Golden Globe nominations and an Academy Award. In 1960, Laughton played a British admiral in Under Ten Flags and also worked with Laurence Olivier in Spartacus on the same year. Laughton received favourable comments for his performance as a Southern US Senator in his final film Advise & Consent on 1962.

Charles Laughton was born in Scarborough, North Riding of Yorkshire on July 1, 1899, son of Robert Laughton and Eliza who were both hotel keepers. Laughton was cast in play with his future wife Elsa Lanchester. Laughton lived and worked with Lanchester until his death. Renal Cancer was the reason behind his death on December 15, 1962 and was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
