José Ramón Larraz Gil was a Spanish director of exploitation and horror films, such as the erotic and bloody Vampyres in 1974. When he moved to Paris, he started his career as comic writer for magazines, like Spirou and Pilote. His most popular creation was the action-comic series Paul Foran, under his name “Gil”. He also made several artistic contributions. He moved to England in 1976 and began making films, later relocating his operations back to Spain. He produced different types of movies, but he is best known for his horror films, like Symptoms, a British exploitation horror film in 1974; the film an official entry at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival. He won the “Maria” Honorary Award for the Sitges Catalonian International Film Festival in 2009. He is also known for Whirpool (1970) and La muerte incierta (1973). He retired from filmmaking at the age of 63.

He wrote and directed many films: Whirlpool in 1970; Deviation in 1971; Watch Out Gringo! Sabata Will Return in 1972; The House That Vanished in 1973; Emma, Dark Doors, Symptoms and Vampyres in 1974; The Violation of the Bitch in 1974; The Golden Lady and El Periscopio in 1979; Polvos mágicos and Stigma in 1980; The National Mummy in 1981; Black Candles in 1982; Rest in Pieces in 1987; Edge of the Axe in 1988 and Deadly Manor in 1990.

José Ramón Larraz Gil was born in 1929 in Barcelona, Spain and died on September 3, 2013 in Malaga, Spain.
