Barbara Kopple (born July 30, 1946) is an American film director known for her 2005 documentary work about women journalists stationed in the Iraq War. She met filmmakers Albert and David Maysles and assisted them on their documentary Salesman and performed the camera work for their film on the Rolling Stones, titled as Gimme Shelter.

In 1972, Kopple started her own production company, Cabin Creek Films, and began filming the Miners for Democracy movement led by Arnold Miller. She has worked with A Conversation with Gregory Peck and documentaries on Woody Allen, Mike Tyson and, Mariel Hemingway.

She won her first Academy Award for Harlan County (1976) and American Dream (1991), a feature-length documentary that captured Hormel strike which premiered at the New York Film Festival on 1990 and earned her a second Academy Award. She then completed her first non-documentary feature film, Havoc, starring Anne Hathaway and Bijou Phillips, and directed episodes of the television drama series Homicide: Life on the Street and Oz, winning a Directors Guild of America.

She was among the 19 filmmakers who worked together to produce the anti-war film Winter Soldier, about the Winter Soldier Investigation. She presented the documentary Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing, about the Dixie Chicks' George W. Bush-related controversy, in the fall of 2006. It was followed in 2012 about Mariel Hemingway and about the 150th Anniversary of The Nation magazine. The film Running Crazy on Hemingway was shown at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and on the Oprah Winfrey Network.
