Henry King (January 24, 1886 – June 29, 1982) was an American actor and successful filmmaker in his era. King’s early credits includ the comedy 23 1/2 Hours Leave (1919), Tol’able David (1921), The White Sister (1923), in which he made Ronald Colman a star, and Romola (1924), featuring Lillian Gish and her sister, Dorothy, Stella Dallas (1925), The Winning of Barbara Worth (1926), featuring Gary Cooper, and The Magic Flame (1927).

King joined Twentieth Century-Fox in 1930 with his first major sound film State Fair (1933). He directed Spencer Tracy in Marie Galante (1934) and a remake of D.W. Griffith’s 1920 film, Way Down East (1935), with Henry Fonda. His biggest hit, Lloyd’s of London, stars Freddie Bartholomew with Tyrone Power, and later Seventh Heaven (1937). King’s Old Chicago (1937) earned six Academy Award nominations. His musical Alexander’s Ragtime Band (1938), featuring Ethel Merman, also received an Oscar nomination for Best picture. He made Jesse James (1939), one of Power’s best vehicles, with Randolph Scott and Jane Darwell.

King made Little Old New York (1940) and his religious drama The Song of Bernadette (1943), an adaptation by Franzel Werfel, starring Jennifer Jones. His biggest hit of the decade, Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing (1955), stars Jennifer Jones and William Holden, The Bravados (1958), This Earth Is Mine (1959), Beloved Infidel (1959), about F. Scott Fitzgerald (Gregory Peck) and Sheilah Graham (Deborah Kerr) love’s affair.

In 1955, King received The George Eastman Award for distinguished contribution to the art of film. He died of a heart attack while asleep in 1982.
