Helmut Käutner was a German film director active mostly in the 1940s and 1950s. He started his career at the end of the Weimar Republic and released his first major films in Nazi Germany.

His film Der Hauptmann von Köpenick in 1956 was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 29th Academy Awards. His film The Rest is Silence in 1959 was entered into the 9^th Berlin International Film Festival.

Helmut Käutner was born on 25 March 1908 in Düsseldorf, Germany and died on 20 April 1980 in Castellina in Chianti, Province of Siena, Italy.
