He is known for his drama horror film The Beautiful, the Bloody, and the Bare (1964), about an artist and his wife who hold art classes using nude models, convincing their photographer friend Pete from Europe a promising career; the film stars Jack Lowe, Tom Signorelli, and Mai Dey. He directed his drama film Infidelity American Style (1967), written by Sean Martin and Eugene Price (screenplay), starring Brooks Cunningham, Joanna Mills, and Peggy Steffans.

Johnsen’s The Secret Society (1965), starring Judy Adler and Darlene Bennett, explores sex clubs, specifically those who are members of a national sex club known only as the "Secret Society," where girls receive no money for their services, doing it for entertainment .
