James Robert Jarmusch was born on January 22, 1953, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, composer, and editor. He has been a major supporter of independent cinema since the 1980s.

He has directed such films like, Stranger Than Paradise in 1984, a black and white deadpan comedy film starring John Lurie, Richard Edson and Eszter Balint, and Cecillia Stark. He has written and directed Down by Law in 1986, a classic film, starring Tom Waits, Roberto Benigni, and John Lurie. In 1989, he released Mystery Train, an independent anthology film, a three section story that includes foreign protagonists, revealed over the same night. Few years after, he released Dead Man in 1995, featuring Johnny Depp and Billy Bob Thornton. In 1999, The Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai was released, featuring Forest Whitaker. The Coffee and Cigarettes, released in 2003, consist of 11 short stories which share coffee and cigarettes as usual thread.

Jarmusch released Broken Flowers in 2005, a comedy-drama film that focused on an aging “Don Juan,” who takes off on a cross-country journey to track his four former lovers after receiving a letter from anonymous woman that he has a son. The film features Bill Murray, Jeffrey Wright, Sharon Stone, Jessica Lange, Frances Conroy, and Tilda Swinton. For almost a decade, Jarmusch released Only Lovers Left Alive in 2013, a comedy-drama film starring Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska. The movie was about a romance between two vampires. It was nominated for Palme d’Or at 2013 Cannes Film Festival, and it was also ranked among the 100 greatest film since 2002, and it was the fourth greatest movie of the 2010s by the Hollywood Reporters. In 2016, he wrote and directed Paterson, a daily experiences of a city bus driver and a poet (Adam Driver) and his wife (Golshifteh Farahani), in Paterson, New Jersey. Recently, he released his first horror-comedy film, The Dead Don’t Die, presented at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

Jim Jarmush has won awards. In 1980, his movie Permanent Vacation won him the Josef von Sternberg Award at the International Heidelberg, and in 1999, he was honored of the Douglas Sirk Preis at Filmfest Hamburg, Germany.

His film Stranger Than Paradise won the Camera d’Or at cannes Film Festival in 1984. He was also honored at Provincetown International Film Festival with Filmmaker of the Edge Award in 2004. In 2005, he won the Grand Prix for his film Broken Flowers at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.
