Marco Bellocchio is an Italian filmmaker, screenwriter, and actor. Bellocchio was born in Bobbio, near Piacenza, on November 9th, 1939. His father was a lawyer, while his mother was a school teacher. He grew up with a strict Catholic upbringing. In Milan, he began studying philosophy but then decided to enter film school. His first-ever film was Fists in the Pockets in 1965, winner of the Silver Sail at the 1965 Festival del film Locarno; the film was funded by family members and shot on the family property.

His works include China is Near, Sbatti il mostro in prima pagina (or Slap the Monster on Page One), Nel Nome del Padre (or In the name of the Father), Victory March, A Leap in the Dark, Henry IV, Devil in the Flesh, and My Mother’s Smile. In 1991, his film The Conviction won the Silver Bear - Special Jury Prize. He also directed documentaries, like Broken Dreams. In 1999, the Italian filmmaker was given an Honorable Prize for his contribution to cinema at the 21st Moscow International Film Festival. He was also awarded in September 2011 with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 68th Venice International Film Festival. Marco Ballocchio's film in 2012, Dormant Beauty, was picked to compete for the Golden Lion at the 69th Venice International Film Festival. He also acted in films like Love and Anger in 1969, N. P. in 1971, Pianeta Venere in 1972.
