Barry Levinson (April 6, 1942) is an American actor, screenwriter, and film director known for his versatility in making mid-budget comedy-drama films and variety shows. He is noted in Mel Brooks comedies, like Silent Movie (1976), High Anxiety (1977), in which he played a bellboy, and for the Oscar-nominated script (co-written by then-wife Valerie Curtin) Justice for All (1979).

Levinson began as a director with Diner (1982), and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, the baseball drama film The Natural (1984), starring Robert Redford, Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), starring Robin Williams, the historical crime drama Bugsy (1991), and Dustin Hoffman’s Wag the Dog (1997), co-starring Robert De Niro. His critically acclaimed Rain Man (1988), starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise -- Levinson appeared as a doctor -- won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, including the Golden Bear at the 39th Berlin International Film Festival.

His other three films were Tin Men (1987), the immigrant family saga Avalon (1990), featuring Elijah Wood’s earliest screen appearances, and Liberty Heights (1999). He is a producer or executive producer for The Perfect Storm (2000), directed by Wolfgang Petersen; Analyze That (2002), starring De Niro and Billy Crystal, Possession (2002), and the political comedy Man of the Year (2006). He finished production on The Humbling (2014), starring Al Pacino, and Rock the Kasbah (2015), written by Mitch Glazer and starring Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, and Kate Hudson.

Levinson received the lifetime Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement in 2010 from the Writers Guild of America.
