Such Good Friends is a curious tragi-comedy of manners about "the good life" in New York in the "Swinging Sixties." Adapted from Lois Gould's partly autobiographical novel of 1970, it deals with a common situation - infidelity - in unusual circumstances, as a wife discovers her husband's multiple infidelities while he is in a coma. She becomes disillusioned with her superficial lifestyle, and with that of her friends. For Otto Preminger's probe into the lives of these hip, wealthy New Yorkers who seem to have it all, Bass created a near-abstract symbol of two seductively entwined female legs, evoking the more casual sitting poses of the period, as well as the greater focus on freer lifestyles and more open sexual habits that were associated with the 1960's.
