American actor Joseph Angelo D'Allesandro III is the most famous sex symbol of American underground films in the 20th century, and a sex symbol of gay subculture. He was arrested in the Catskills in 1964, ran away in 1965 and supported himself by nude modeling. He appeared most notably in short films and magazines for Bob Mizer's Athletic Model Guild.

Dallesandro played a hustler in the film Flesh (1968), produced by Andy Warhol, and Lonesome Cowboys during the same year. It became a crossover hit. In 1970, Rolling Stone declared his second starring vehicle, Trash, as "Best Film of the Year," and Dallesandro worked again in both Warhol's Frankenstein and Dracula (both 1974), directed by Morrissey. He appeared in Serge Gainsbourg's Je t'aime moi non (1976), starring actress Jane Birkin. Joe Dallesandro's work for Lucky Luciano in Francis Coppola's The Cotton Club (1984) was another career highlight, the guidance of manager Stann Findelle, the actor nabbed roles in Critical Condition (1987), in the Western crime mystery film Sunset (1988) as Dutch Kieffer with Bruce Willis and James Garner, in Cry-Baby (1990) with Johnny Depp, Guncrazy (1992) with Drew Barrymore, and in Steven Soderbergh's (1999) The Limey.

Joe Dallesandro received The Teddy Award, for filmmakers and artists who have contributed to LGBT people in February 2009. The Little Joe biography, Superstar, by Michael Ferguson was released earlier in 2001, and a documentary film, Little Joe (2009), was released with Dallesandro as writer and producer. It also featured his adopted daughter Vedra Mehagian. Dallesandro is openly bisexual, has been married three times and has three children.
